Melbourne "Melba" Naomi (Vaughn) Brooks

Melbourne “Melba” Naomi Brooks, 93, of Sullivan, Indiana quietly slipped into God’s everlasting embrace on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at her residence.

She was born on March 18, 1924 in New Lebanon, Indiana the daughter of Hayden and Myrtle (Wolfe) Vaughn. As a child, she grew up as a New Lebanon Tiger. She was a cheerleader, captain of the girls’ basketball team, and she enjoyed participating in spelling bees. She married Lewis Brooks on September 21. She was a clerk at the Roots Store for 21 years and later retired from the Sullivan High School cafeteria. She was a member of the Sullivan First Christian Church.

Melba loved her family, her church and her community. She was an avid Larry Bird and Pacer fan, never missing a chance to watch them play. She also enjoyed a good game of cards, and working in her flowers.

Melba is preceded in death by her parents, loving husband, Lewis Brooks, brother, Hayden Vaughn.

Survivors include her children; Sue Stewart of Elmhurst, Illinois and Michael (Cherri) Brooks of Sullivan, Indiana, four grandchildren; Rob (Susan) Brooks, Katie (Bobby) Farmer, Kelly (Chuck) Hawkins and Lindsey (Fernando) Alandia and eight great-grandchildren; Will Brooks, Nick Brooks, Camryn Farmer, Landyn Farmer, Gavyn Farmer, Mikalyn Hawkins, Sebastian Alandia and Gabriela Alandia.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Monday, May 15, 2017 at Brust Funeral Home in Sullivan, Indiana with Rev. David Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, Indiana. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Monday, May 15, 2017 at Brust Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to Kindred Hospice 2901 Ohio Blvd Suite 116 Terre Haute, Indiana 47803.

Her kind and loving spirit, a heart of compassion, and her wonderful sense of humor will fit perfectly in Gods presence.

An extra special thank you to her best friend of 75 years Becky Badger and to Karen & Bob Bowen for always being a phone call away and bringing mom so much joy.
