Walter Lee Smith

Walter Lee Smith, age 90 of Sullivan, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 surrounded by his family.

Walt was born in Sullivan County on June 19, 1925 to Ralph and Opal (Thomas) Smith.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Elsie (Moody) Smith. A son Terry, three brothers Don, Joe and Jim and one sister Peggy Barre.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years Phyllis (Meng) Smith. A son Mike (and Linda) Smith of Bedford, a stepson John (and Linda) Meng of Sullivan, a stepdaughter Jane (and Brian) Loudenburg of Hurricane, WVA, and one sister Mary Lou Owings of Sullivan.  Several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

Walt was co-owner for 40 years of Maxwell-Bevis Shoe Store in Sullivan.  He was a member of the Mary Sherman Hospital Board of Directors, the Variance Board and a Past President of the Sullivan Rotary Club and a member of the Rose Chapel Methodist Church.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate his life will be at Brust Funeral Home in Sullivan on Saturday, April 30th at 1:00 PM with Rev. Jan Bond officiating.  Visitation will be on Friday evening April 29th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Interment will follow in Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, Indiana.
