Bertha Louise Abel Mason, 97, of Sullivan, Indiana passed away peacefully on Friday, October 20, 2023, at The Waters of Sullivan, Indiana. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and great aunt to many.

She was born on February 9, 1926, in Decker, Indiana the daughter of Alonzo Abel and Katherine West Abel. Bertha went to grade school in Carlisle, High School in Sullivan and was a cheerleader at both.  She was Miss Sullivan in 1944. Bertha married Jesse J. Mason Jr. on February 9, 1947 and was a lifelong homemaker. She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church in Sullivan, Indiana since 1941. She was a homemaker, wedding planner, caterer, seamstress, tailor, quilter and an amazing cook. Helping kids in 4-H was a passion for her.  

Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jesse J. Mason Jr., two sons; Larry Jay Mason and Gary Ray Mason, four brothers; Alonzo Abel Jr., Les Abel, Archie Abel and Rebert Abel and three sisters; Esther Shorter, Geraldine Moran and Norma Jean Wright. 

Survivors include her daughter, Janice Mason Hood (Michael) of Indianapolis, Indiana, daughter-in-law, Marsha Thacker Mason, three grandchildren; Tiffany Garrett (Michael),  Afton Bailey (Ernest) and Maggie Mullins (Nate) and five great-grandchildren; Emma, Elijah, Ethan, Morgan and Macey.

Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at Brust Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Thursday, October 26, 2023, at Brust Funeral Home in Sullivan, Indiana with Pastor Bret Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, Indiana.
