On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, the Lord called home Calvin W. Hilgediek, age 92, of Sullivan, Indiana at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
He was born on March 19, 1931, in Sullivan, Indiana the son of Carl and Helen Phillips Hilgediek. Calvin graduated from Sullivan High School and went onto Wabash College where he played football and ran track. He served in the US Army and after his service returned home to work for his father at Hilgediek Plumbing and Heating. Later he bought Hilgediek Plumbing and Heating and continued running the family-owned business for several years. He was a long-time member of the Sullivan First Christian Church where he served as the Sunday School Superintendent, an Elder and taught the men’s class for numerous years. He was also a member of the Sullivan Masonic Lodge #263 and also served as a City Councilman.
A loving husband and devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Calvin enjoyed spending time with family most. He enjoyed sports, being a Colts fan. Calvin coached little league and Babe Ruth baseball in Sullivan for several years.
Calvin is preceded in death by his parents, wife of 65 years, Donna Hilgediek, brother, Robert Hilgediek, sister, Gwendolyn Waterman and granddaughter, Stacy Ayers.
Survivors include his daughter, Debra (Bruce) Ayers of Sullivan, Indiana, two sons; Danny (Gaye) Hilgediek of Lafayette, Indiana and Thomas (Tina) Hilgediek of Jasper, Indiana, four grandchildren; Justin Ayers, Nicholas (Antonia) Hilgediek, Samuel Hilgediek and Hannah (Sam) Loga and three great-grandchildren; Makiya Ayers, Adelina “Prim” Ayers and Gabriel Hilgediek.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at First Christian Church in Sullivan, Indiana with Rev. David Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, Indiana with a Military graveside service by the Sullivan County Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Monday, August 14, 2023, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a Masonic Service at 7:00 PM and from 9:00 AM until the service on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.
