Darrel Lee Burton, 87, of Sullivan, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Miller’s Merry Manor.
He was born on January 9, 1933 in Sullivan County, Indiana, the second son of Mabel Barnes and Herbert Burton. He was very popular and affectionately nicknamed “Hot Rod” by his early peers. Lee Sluder was one of his favorite and loyal friends who graduated with Darrel from Graysville High School in 1950. Darrel then joined the 82nd airborne division Fort Bragg, North Carolina during the Korean War. While in the service Darrel earned medals of marksmanship. His natural agility skills made Darrel hard to beat in any sport he applied himself. His left-handedness always caught his opponents off-guard; ping pong, tennis and golf being his last passions for play.
Darrel was married briefly to Laconda Hayden Hill Burton. He enjoyed farming and helping his brother Dwight who lived nearby in the Graysville area. Dwight was Darrel’s primary caretaker as they were close.
Survivors include two brothers, Dwight Burton of Graysville, Indiana and Bill Burton of Sullivan, Indiana.
During the last stage of his life at Miller’s Merry Manor, first north, then south, Darrel maintained the same quiet, sweet, reserved, affectionate disposition he always had and was a favorite of both staff and fellow residents.
Darrel was a pleasure to everyone.
Per Darrel’s wishes cremation was chosen with burial at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to Brust Funeral Home in Sullivan, Indiana.
