Joe M. Smith, 81, of Sullivan, Indiana formally of Hymera passed away and entered his eternal home in Heaven on September 21, 2024, at his residence.
He was born on March 12, 1943, to the late LeeRoy and Therese Evans Smith. He married Janice Ladson Smith on May 3, 1963.
Joe was a 1961 class graduate of Hymera High School. He loved the Lord and was a member of the Hymera Independent Community Church. Joe was a member of the Masonic Lodge #263. He retired from Universal Peabody Coal Mine and the Laborers' Local Union #204. In Joe's younger days he loved to coon hunt, camp at Sullivan Lake with his wife, coach baseball, help with the Boy Scouts, 4-H horse and pony programs and many Barrel Horse Associations.
He was preceded by his parents, son, Joey Smith, brothers, Hughie, Jack, Dick and Mike, and sisters, Irma, Rosemary, Betty, Carolyn and Becky.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 61 years, Janice M. Smith, his children; Jeff (Rita) Smith, Toni (Jim) Wiles and Jennifer (Darin) Cox, grandchildren; Steve Smith, Maria (Jonathan) Neal, Theresa (Andrew) Ray and Jenna Cox, ten great-grandchildren,; Autumn Ray, Lawsen Ray, Brody Ray, Sadie Ray, Atika Padgett, Oliveah Padgett, Emrys Padgett, Robert Neal, Josh Neal and Kiera Smith, three sisters-in-laws; Barbara Enstrom, June Ladson and Bonnie Smith, special people; Merri West, TJ McKenzie, Ben Bailey, Mara Bailey and Jozelyn Holt, special neighbors; DeeDee Daves, Alan Daves, Danny Wright and Reesa Wright and his beloved dogs; Baby and Saint. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to everyone who cared for and encouraged him during his illness.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the service on Friday, September 27, 2024, at Brust Funeral Home. Masonic service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, September 27, 2024. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, September 27, 2024, at Brust Funeral Home in Sullivan, Indiana with Pastor Jordan Stockrahm and Chaplain Jeff Fulk officiating. Interment will follow in K of P Cemetery in Hymera, Indiana.
