Ronald L. Moreland, 79, of Palmetto, FL, concluded an amazing life that was lived to the fullest on July 13, 2026. He was born on February 15, 1947, to parents Clyde and Lily Moreland in Terre Haute, IN. Ron was truly one-of-a-kind and built a life defined by loving his family and friends, hard work, proudly serving our country, helping others, not knowing a stranger, and making time for a good time. He always had a smile on his face, and you would know when he was in the room. His greatest pride was his four children who all inherited his drive, compassion and natural ability to make friends with anyone.

He grew up in Staunton, IN, where he would go on to graduate from Staunton High School. From 1966-1968, he served as a Sergeant in the United States Army 9th Infantry Division and 17th Cavalry Regiment, during the Vietnam War. He was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for his service.

In 1969, Ron married Linda Ardell of Staunton, IN, and together they welcomed four children, Rebecca, Ronda, Jennifer and Nick, residing in Danville, IN. Ron and Linda later separated while maintaining their friendship and commitment to raising their children.

In 1994, he married Jane Snyder of Sullivan, IN, and lived many happy years together spending time with family and friends at Lake Sullivan, traveling and doting on their beloved dog, Daisy.

Ron worked as an Assistant Production Engineer for Conrail/CSX where he led large-scale crews throughout the Midwest maintaining tracks and crossings. He was a proud railroader, following in the footsteps of his dad. After a fulfilling and successful 38-year career, he retired in 2007.

He was an active and proud member of the American Legion and VFW, serving in several different leadership roles through the years including Commander of American Legion Sullivan Post 139 and Commander of VFW Sullivan Post 2459. One of his favorite service roles was driving fellow veterans to and from the VA Hospital in Indianapolis. He loved the camaraderie and friendship with people he met at various posts. He had a good track record for winning weekly drawings, pull tabs and euchre games, too. There is comfort in knowing that he passed away at a place he loved dearly – the bar at the American Legion, surrounded by friends.

In October 2024, Ron proudly took part in an honor flight to Washington, D.C. While visiting the memorials, this day brought all the respect and gratitude of serving our country full circle. While this experience was a great honor for him personally, he also got to pay his respects and honor others who have served.

Deeply committed to giving back, Ron spent many years in service to others. He was a dedicated Mason and a member of the Elks Lodge, where he contributed to their veterans’ programs and fundraisers.

Ron is lovingly remembered and will be deeply missed by his family: his children, Rebecca Moreland (Steve) Green of Indianapolis, Ronda Moreland (Louise Marsh) of Indianapolis, Jennifer (Dave) Cline of Danville and Nick (Kristen) Moreland of Whitestown; his grandchildren Beau, Kadia, Katcher and Monroe; his siblings, Donna (Eddie) Cornetto (2 kids, 4 grandkids), and Joe (Monya) Moreland (4 kids, 6 grandkids); his nephew, Bradley BJ Wallace, who he was especially close with; as well as generations of extended family members, many friends and fellow veterans from the American Legion and VFW.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Moreland; his parents Clyde and Lily Moreland; and his sister, Connie Wallace Horton.

A graveside service will begin at Noon on Saturday, August 8th at Center Ridge Cemetery located at 704 W. Johnson St., Sullivan, IN 47882. Following the service, a lunch and program to honor Ron will be held at VFW Sullivan Post 2459, located at 201 W. Illinois St., Sullivan, IN 47882. Later that day, a Celebration of Life will take place from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at VFW Brazil Post 1127, Ron’s home post, located at 303 S. Depot St., Brazil, IN 47834.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VFW Brazil Post 1127’s Veterans in Need Fund that directly supports Clay County veterans. Donations can be made through this GoFundMe page  and the family will present this to the Post Commander at the Celebration of Life in Ron’s honor.
