Salvador Vasques “Poncho or Uncle P”, 82, of Carlisle, Indiana passed away on March 10, 2022 at Sullivan County Community Hospital.
He was born on February 29, 1940 at his grandfather’s house in San Fernando, California the son of Ramon Vasquez and Poriria Ayala Vasquez, he was one out of nine children and a first-generation born in the USA. Poncho grew up on Hardison Ranch in Fillmore, California and worked on the ranch as a young teen. He attended Fillmore High School and in 1958 when he was 18 years old, he decided to join the US Marine Corps. After his stint in the military, he worked as a car mechanic and became a transmission expert while working at Mike’s Transmission in Fillmore and he begun a career as a motorcycle mechanic. Poncho became a specialist in restoring vintage Volkswagen bugs, which was his passion and he drove a vintage bug himself for many years. Poncho spent the last 25 years living in Carlisle, Indiana.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Diane Vasquez.
Poncho is survived by his only child, his son, Dylan Schmidtz and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
Always laughing, we kids knew when our Uncle P was in the room. He has the loudest infectious laugh and that is something we will always remember.
Uncle P’s wish was for his body to be donated to science. Unfortunately, his death was a result of COVID and his wish was unfilled. May you rest in peace Poncho.
