Sonner served on the Selective Service Board,  was a Sullivan County Councilman for 34 years, organized the Sullivan County American Legion Honor Guard which conducted hundreds of military funeral services for veterans, and for 47 years, helped oversee the placement of American flags on the graves of veterans every Memorial Day.  For the past six years, he organized a Fourth of July program on the square to honor as he said, “the granddaddy of all of our holidays.”

Sonner loved his family, his country, and working for his community. He was passionate in his encouragement of recycling. He was truly an outstanding example of the “greatest generation.”
