Gerald James Kunkel

Gerald James Kunkel, 87, of Sullivan passed away at 7:20AM, Monday, June 15, 2015 at Sullivan Co. Community Hospital.

He was born in Jasper, Indiana August 25, 1927 the son of Claude Kunkel and Marie Schneider Kunkel.

Gerald was a WWII Navy Veteran, graduated from Indiana State University. He was a retired teacher, assistant principal, athletic director and basketball coach. A member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Sullivan BPOE #911, and the Indiana Teachers Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, also one brother, Don Kunkel.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Jo Brown Kunkel, whom he married on September 10, 1955, two daughters; Cathy Rash (Phil) of Plainfield, IN, Beth Tislow (Jay) of Carlisle, IN, one brother; Kenny Kunkel (Dody) of Lebanon, IN, one sister; Doris Daniel of Evansville, IN, three grandchildren Stacey Beall (Greg), Chad Tislow (Leah), and Lauren Guy (Justin), five great grandchildren; Lily, Landry, Camden, Brody, and Hudson, several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation. Cremation is scheduled. A private graveside services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Sullivan Co. Humane Shelter.

Arrangements were entrusted to Banks and Brust Funeral Home.
