Victoria Elizabeth (Strange) Irvin, 101, of Sullivan, Indiana, died at her son’s residence in Marshall, Illinois at a beautiful old age on November 2, 2015. She was surrounded by her adoring family and left this world peacefully.
One of twelve children, Victoria was born on April 10, 1914 in Bramble, Indiana to Augustus “Gustie” Strange and Genevieve “Genny” (Padgett) Strange.
Victoria met her late husband, Herschel George Irvin, at a dance at the Sullivan Kat-a-Korner, and the two were married on September 2, 1935. Victoria loved dancing and claimed that, while Herschel couldn’t dance very well and even stepped on her toes, her good husband always made an effort for her. She loved him dearly.
Herschel and Victoria would have celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary this year.
Victoria was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sullivan. She loved God, her family, playing the piano, canning, cooking, playing Euchre, working in the yard with her flowers and vegetable garden, reading, and telling stories.
Victoria was preceded in death by her parents; husband (who passed away in 1979); brothers: Manuel and Emil; sisters: Lucille, Clara, Pauline, Ellen, Theresa, Mary, Patricia and Irene; newborn son: Stanley; son-in-law: Bill Orr; and daughter-in-law: Claudette Irvin.
She is survived by her sister: Margaret “Maggie”; sons: John (Marsha), Herschel “Junior” (Kathy), Gilbert (Claudette) and Thomas (Pamela); daughters: Nancy, Susan (Andy) and Mary; twenty-four grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Victoria loved reading the obituaries, and her granddaughter hopes that she will be pleased with reading this one from heaven.
